Flow Design Architects Recognized with Multiple Honors in Massachusetts ADU Design Challenge
Flow Design Architects earned multiple Jury Honors in the Massachusetts ADU Design Challenge, reinforcing the studio's leadership in innovative, scalable, and design-forward housing solutions — from a 250-square-foot compact studio to a 900-square-foot high-performance dwelling.

Flow Design Architects is proud to announce its recognition in the Massachusetts ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) Design Challenge, with multiple entries earning Jury Honors — a distinction that reinforces the firm’s position at the forefront of innovative, scalable, and design-forward housing solutions.
Led by Darguin Fortuna, AIA, NCARB, NOMA, alongside Senior Designer Whandy Martinez and Designer Yirkelys Santana, the firm submitted a series of forward-thinking ADU prototypes that explore the intersection of design excellence, affordability, sustainability, and constructability.
Award-Winning Projects
Jury Honor — Notable Compact ADU

Designed by Whandy Martinez
The Compact Studio ADU challenges conventional assumptions about size and livability. At just 250 square feet, the design demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can amplify spatial experience beyond physical constraints.
As described in the submission, the project “redefines the relationship between size and livability… concentrating living into a precise linear volume elevated lightly above the ground, minimizing impact while preserving landscape continuity.”
Key design strategies include:
Elevated structure to reduce site impact
Vaulted ceiling to enhance spatial perception
Integrated, built-in systems for maximum efficiency
Strategic glazing to draw natural light deep into the interior
This project stands as a powerful statement: design — not square footage — is the true driver of quality living environments.
Jury Honor — Notable Standard ADU

Designed by Darguin Fortuna, AIA, NCARB, NOMA
The Sustained Living ADU expands the conversation to a 900-square-foot, high-performance dwelling, demonstrating how ADUs can become long-term, adaptable housing solutions across Massachusetts.
The project is conceived as a replicable model that “achieves environmental performance, affordability, and adaptability… while maximizing daylight, passive solar gain, and spatial efficiency.”
Key innovations include:
High-performance envelope and integrated solar strategies
Flexible layouts supporting multigenerational living
Panelized / prefabrication-ready construction systems
Durable, regionally appropriate materials
This design reflects a broader vision: ADUs as a scalable solution to housing shortages, climate responsibility, and evolving household needs.

A System, Not Just Projects
Beyond the award-winning entries, Flow Design Architects submitted a suite of ADU prototypes that collectively explore a wide range of possibilities — from ultra-compact studios to flexible modular systems and family-oriented dwellings.
These include:
Flexible ADU concepts designed for evolving user needs and multiple construction methodologies
Lofted and vertically layered compact units that maximize section and volume
Replicable, construction-efficient models grounded in real-world building practices
Climate-responsive small-scale dwellings that balance resilience and design expression
Together, these projects demonstrate a clear ambition: to move ADUs from isolated solutions into a coherent, scalable housing strategy.

Leading the Future of Housing
At Flow Design Architects, this recognition is not just about awards — it is about leadership.
The firm’s work in the ADU Design Challenge reflects its broader mission:
To elevate everyday housing through design excellence
To bridge affordability with architectural quality
To empower communities through thoughtful, buildable solutions

By combining design rigor, construction intelligence, and forward-thinking systems, Flow Design Architects continues to push the boundaries of what small-scale housing can achieve.

Looking Ahead
As municipalities across Massachusetts and the country continue to adopt more progressive ADU policies, the need for proven, high-quality, and scalable design solutions has never been greater.
Flow Design Architects is uniquely positioned to lead this movement — bringing together:
Real-world residential expertise
Deep knowledge of codes and constructability
A commitment to innovation rooted in practice
This is not just about ADUs. This is about redefining how we live.
